The Mandalorian actor Giancarlo Esposito, who plays Moff Gideon in the series, recently talked about the upcoming second season. Specifically, the role that the Darksaber he wields in the series plays in the story.
For those of you who have watched the Star Wars animated shows, you are already familiar with the Darksaber and some of its story and history in the franchise. It’s actually an important element, and when Season 2 rolls around, we are going to get to know more about it.
In an interview with Deadline, Esposito opened up about the Darksaber, saying that it is a key to the story and a key to Gideon’s past:
“You’ll see more of the Darksaber, you’ll get the explanation of this ancient weapon to the modern world, a collapsed world. Where did this saber come from and how was it revived? It’s a key in our second season, which will be back sooner than later.
“(The saber) is a key to Moff Gideon’s past, which possibly has a lot to do with where he comes from and his desire to build a planet and bring it back together.”
That’s pretty exciting to learn! I love that they are going to dive into the history of the Darksaber! I think it would be cool if one of the episodes in Season 2 focused on the Darksaber.
The weapon has changed hands a number of times over the years in the Star Wars universe. Before we saw Gideon wield it, the Rebels character Sabine Wren handed it over to Bo-Katan Kryze. Both of these characters are said to be appearing in the upcoming season. I can’t wait to see how Gideon ended up getting his hands on it!
When talking about the character, Esposito said:
“You could always read his mind through his eyes. I took a look at the imagery of this supreme chancellor, which really helped me. He is a supreme being in a sense. He knows it, but not everyone in the universe knows it. What we don’t know is how extra special he is yet.”
The actor previously talked about his character teasing that he also might have Force powers:
“To be in the position of having that regal, graceful power but have this saber which delineates a different part of me than any other character. To have this saber means I can use it, and I can do my own dirty work, that I’m a fighter, that I’m a warrior. That’s part of me. It also creates the possibility that he is one of the ones. He possibly has that, and that to me is interesting because is he really that fallen hero? Is he a descendant of Darth Vader. Who is he? What does he want? He knows all about everything, and you’ll have to wait to find out. Yeah, he’s actually pretty good with that Darksaber too.”
The Mandalorian Season 2 debuts on Disney+ in October 2020.
