‘Suicide Squad’: Joel Kinnaman Confirmed to play Rick Flagg

suicide-squad-movie-posterBack in February, we reported that actor Joel Kinnaman had signed on to replace Tom Hardy as Rick Flagg in Warner Bros.’ DC Comics adaptation Suicide Squad, although the studio never confirmed the news. While doing press for his action-thriller Run All Night, in theaters this weekend, Joel Kinnaman told AlloCine that he is now officially part of the cast. Here’s what he had to say in a succinct statement below:

“All I can say is that I will be in the movie, and it’s going to be amazing.”

In a separate interview with Uproxx, the actor was asked if he feels less pressure taking on a lesser-known character like Rick Flagg, as opposed to the title character in last year’s RoboCop reboot. The actor teased that, while he does want to learn the back story of Rick Flagg, David Ayer is creating a new universe with this adaptation.

“Yeah, for sure. And you want the back story of the character, but I think this is also a universe that David Ayer is going to create – there’s a lot more. Also, when you’re doing the first movie in a comic book, you always have the leeway of you’re going to move it from a comic book to a film and put it in real life – you’re always going to make a lot of changes and create a new universe. So you’re kind of setting a precedent. When you’re remaking a movie that’s already been made and a character that was made for the film, then it becomes a different thing and it’s more difficult to create something new without offending some people.”

In yet another interview with Screen Rant, the actor expressed his love for writer-director David Ayer‘s script, adding that the story is “amazing” with interesting characters.

“I love the script. It’s super entertaining and David Ayer is a really interesting director. You know there’s a lot of flashy directors who are good with the camera, but when you get people who are from another aspect of filmmaking into a director’s role, you’re always very happy if it’s a writer or an editor, because those are the storytellers, and David is really a storyteller. Even though this is a massive superhero production it’s an amazing story. The conversations we’ve had about the characters are really interesting, and he really gets to the bottom of things. Sometimes you’re worried, if you’re going to do a film like that, that it’s just going to be superhero fun but nothing’s going to go under the surface. But here I feel like we can get both.”

Screen Rant also spoke with Joel Kinnaman‘s Run All Night co-star Ed Harris, who was rumored in January to be a contender to play Rick Flagg Sr. in Suicide Squad. We haven’t heard anything about the actor’s involvement since then, and Ed Harris said he hasn’t heard anything regarding Suicide Squad, but Joel Kinnaman did have “something” for him to look at.

“I don’t know anything about that. Joel mentioned that there was something he wanted me to look at, or think about doing, but I don’t know if that was it or not.”

Joel Kinnaman‘s Rick Flagg will be joined by Will Smith (Deadshot), Margot Robbie (Harley Quinn), Jared Leto (The Joker), Jai Courtney (Boomerang), Cara Delevingne (Enchantress) and Viola Davis (Amanda Waller). With production set to begin next month in Toronto, hopefully we hear more details regarding Suicide Squad in the very near future. Do you think Joel Kinnaman is the right choice to play Rick Flagg?
