Paul Bettany Explains That SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY is a Gangster Movie

We knew that the Han Solo movie, Solo: A Star Wars Story, was going to be filled with the shady characters that reside in the underworld of the Star Wars universe. We don’t know much about the story, though. Other than all of the stuff that director Ron Howard has been sharing on social media, we haven’t seen anything from this movie! We’re only five months away from its release and we haven’t even really seen an official promo photo. That’s kinda crazy. We normally would have seen something by now.
Thanks to a recent interview with actor Paul Bettany, who has a small role in the film, we now have a little new detail to help break down the mystery of the film. Up until this point, the movie could have turned out to have a various number of different themes, but we’ve now learned that it will be a caper gangster film! During an interview with Total Film, Bettany said:
“It’s Han Solo’s story, and of course his story would be a caper. On one level it’s a gangster movie. That’s really interesting, because it’s within the canon but really different. It’s f**king Han Solo!”
It’s been rumored that Bettany might be playing some kind of classy intergalactic gangster. I imagine that he has some kind of high ranking place in an organized crime gang. With Solo being a gangster flick, you can bet that there’s going to be high-speed chases, shoot-outs, back-stabbing, and all kinds of fun drama that Han Solo will find himself in the middle of.
This seems like a Star Wars movie that not a lot of fans are that excited about. I’m sure the fact that Lucasfilm hasn’t released anything official yet is only building the concern. The movie is pretty much a Han Solo origin story, but I do love that Bettany says that it’s going to be “really different.”
Solo: A Star Wars Story also stars Alden Ehrenreich, Donald Glover, Woody Harrelson, Emilia Clarke, Thandie Newton, and Phoebe Waller-Bridge. The movie is still slated to be released on May 25, 2018.
