It’s no secret that Mark Hamill wasn’t 100% satisfied with how Luke Skywalker was portrayed in Star Wars: The Last Jedi. At one point he even said that he was insulted. Well, now that the movie has been released and people have seen it, he’s not changing his opinion. He still isn’t happy with how Luke Skywalker was portrayed in the movie and he even goes as far to say that “He’s not my Luke Skywalker.”

While doing an interview with JarJar Abrams, Hamill explained:

“I said to Rian, ‘Jedi’s don’t give up.’ I mean, even if he had a problem, he would maybe take a year to try and regroup. But if he made a mistake, he would try and right that wrong.”

He just doesn’t feel that Luke would have acted this way and I know a lot of Star Wars fans feel the same way. But, he goes on to say that he does understand that The Last Jedi wasn’t really a story about Luke Skywalker. It’s a story that focused more on a group of new characters and to tell that story, Luke needed to be something different than what Hamill had in his head. In the end, though, this isn’t his Luke Skywalker.

“This is the next generation of Star Wars, so I almost had to think of Luke as another character. Maybe he’s Jake Skywalker. He’s not my Luke Skywalker, but I had to do what Rian wanted me to do because it serves the story well.”

I’ve been seeing a lot of fans debating over Luke Skywalker’s portrayal in The Last Jedi. I have to say that I found it interesting that Hamill said Jedi don’t give up because they totally do! Obi-Wan Kenobi and Yoda both pretty much gave up and went into hiding just like Luke did. For years they really didn’t do that much to help combat the Dark Side. Yoda was also reluctant to train Luke like Luke was reluctant to train Rey. They just had different reasons. So, Hamill doesn’t really make the strongest argument.
