Lucasfilm Is Reportedly Looking to Cast a Young Luke Skywalker in Its OBI-WAN KENOBI Series

Ever since there’s been talk of an Obi-Wan Kenobi project in development at Lucasfilm, fans knew that it would be set on Tattoonie after the events of Revenge of the Sith. Fans have also speculated that we could very well see a young Luke Skywalker make an appearance. Well, it looks like that might actually be happening.

Entertainment scooper Daniel Richman has shared a report saying that Lucasfilm is currently casting a young Luke Skywalker for the upcoming Kenobi Disney+ series. The news reportedly came from a new casting grid being distributed sent to agents.

This isn’t really surprising. I think a lot of us expected to see Luke show up in the series. The question is… how big of a role will he be playing? It’s not like Luke and Kenobi really hung out much prior to the events in A New Hope. Luke was just out doing his own thing, being a kid, working hard on the farm, and probably complaining a lot.

The Mandalorian director Deborah Chow is now in development on Lucasfilm’s Obi-Wan Kenobi series. When previously talking about the show, she explained that she is happy about is having time to tell the character’s story with a series instead of trying to cram a story into a two-hour film. The filmmaker said that she needs that time to explore the complexity of the character and the state of the galaxy:

“The situation is so complex both for [Obi-Wan] personally and in a way, the state of the galaxy, you sort of need time to explore it and to be honest there are loads of other stories within that period as well, it’s quite a few years. There is so much going on between [Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope] that hasn’t been explored. The idea of being able to go into a character journey plus the politics and plus all the vastness of the empire and what’s going on is exciting just because it feels like a proper period of history and sometimes that is hard to do in two hours. Sometimes with two-hour movies there is always an imperative for the action and the plot to move particularly fast and quickly and to go from action sequence to action sequence and there are many more aspects to storytelling that I find interesting.”

Kenobi writer Hossein Amini also talked about the show, saying:

“I think because of what we were speaking about before, the situation is so complex both for him personally and in a way, the state of the galaxy, you sort of need time to explore it and to be honest there are loads of other stories within that period as well, it’s quite a few years.

He went on to talk about what Kenobi was one of his favorite characters, saying:

“Well he was one of my favorite characters, probably because he spans throughout both the trilogy and the prequels and it’s just something about how different he is from one to the next that is really fascinating and makes him such an iconic character. It’s also that I loved Star Wars because I’ve always been interested in different religions, like the whole notion of the samurai I’ve always loved, there are so many aspects of Star Wars that particularly appealed to me when I was a kid and it’s been actually really exciting being able to look at all the animated series and read many of the books it’s a whole world and galaxy that I’ve loved diving into.”

The Kenobi series doesn’t have a release date yet, but I’m extremely excited to see how it turns out! What do you all think about the possibility of seeing a young Luke Skywalker show up? What kind of role do you think he might play in the story?
