JAY AND SILENT BOB REBOOT Had More VFX Shots Than the Original STAR WARS Movies

In a recent episode of Kevin Smith’s podcast, Fatman on Batman, with Marc Bernardin, Smith got into the practical side of creating his upcoming film, Jay and Silent Bob Reboot. Here’s what he had to say about the visual effects used in making the movie:

“This is not bragging and this is not saying this makes me a better filmmaker by any stretch of the imagination, this is just for the layman to show you how far filmmaking and special effects have come from our childhood. We have three times as many visual effects/CG/visual effects in general in Jay and Silent Bob Reboot than they did in Star Wars.”

But don’t let this fool you into thinking that this Jay and Silent Bob film is going to be some crazy action adventure! It’s just more of a comment on how movies are made today versus forty years ago when the Star Wars films came out. Smith went on to explain:

“Now, that doesn’t mean our movie is like, ‘we’re gonna take you to f****** space. It just means everything that counts as an effects shot. So, anytime we had people in a car, we didn’t do a process trailer, we didn’t put people in a car on top of a truck and drive the truck around. We just threw them on a green screen, or put them on a stage with a green screen behind them, and did the backgrounds later. Every one of those shots counts as an effects shot. So, I mean, even though it didn’t cost as much as blowing up the Death Star, they’re both visual effects shots at the end of the day, so when you just count them like that, we have three times as many as they had in Star Wars and we’re not even a visual effects heavy movie.”

That makes sense, but it still pretty crazy to think about. The practicality of the original Star Wars films is arguably one of the greatest things about the films, according to most die hard fans, so it’s funny that the visual effects that were so heavily criticized in the first three episodes of the saga are now just commonplace in films across the board.

The first trailer for Jay and Silent Bob Reboot is rumored to premiere next week at comic con during the panel Kevin Smith Reboots Hall H! on Saturday, July 20th, at 7:15pm in none other than the famous Hall H!
