Star Wars has always been the subject of a lot of debate among fans, but when Star Wars: The Last Jedi was released, things got super ugly, and fans were divided on the franchise in a way that they’ve never been divided before. The backlash of that film was loud and filled with so much hate.
Well, Star Wars: Rebels star Freddie Prinze Jr. recently addressed this flood of fan hate over the years during an appearance he made on Jeff Dye’s Friendship Pod podcast. Prinze uses some of the things he learned from Rebels creator Dave Filoni to address a lot of these issues that fans have with the franchise. It’s actually a pretty epic and passionate rant. When talking about how Luke Skywalker’s story essentially mirrors that of a Disney princess, he says:
“Luke Skywalker is Cinderella or Sleeping Beauty! He can talk to things that don’t speak English, and he understands what they’re fucking saying; he gets a fairy godfather instead of a fairy godmother, who teaches him how to be the best Jedi in the world in no time fucking flat.”
Prince went on to says that fans have gamified their understanding of how the Force works within the Star Wars world, which he explains strays away from George Lucas’ true vision:
“People bitch about the dumbest things. These are archetype characters, these are George Lucas’ words. There is no Jack Bauer in Star Wars, that character doesn’t exist, it’s not Han Solo, Han Solo’s a reluctant hero, that’s the archetype. Darth Maul, who everybody wants to win, and is everyone’s favorite because he looks sick and he’s great in the video games… fuck you guys! He’s Sisyphus! He is born to fail! Learn your Greek mythology like, I don’t know, George fucking Lucas did! He’s cursed to roll a boulder up the hill only to have it roll to the bottom again every single time for eternity. That is Darth Maul’s quest. He’s in on the joke, you guys. He knows it. He’s just cursed to live that life.”
