Here’s a well-made short film that parodies Rian Johnson‘s fantastic first film Brick as it makes a statement about the current state of toxic Star Wars fandom. It’s also a love letter to the Star Wars franchise. It’s called Star Wars: Revenge of the Incels and this story is built around the real events involving Kelly Marie Tran being bullied out of social media and that silly “fan remake” of The Last Jedi.
In the film, the main character, who happens to be Rian Johnson, embarks on a journey to solve the mystery of what is happening. The supporting characters in the film include J.J. Abrams, Kathleen Kennedy, and several other Star Wars filmmakers that represent characters from Brick. This is a pretty solid homage to that film as it basically tweaks the story of Brick and makes it about Star Wars and the fans.
The film was co-written and directed by Dana James Jones, who is obviously a fan of both films. James Jones grew up in San Clemente, CA, which is where Johnson shot Brick. So one of the cool things that he did with the film is to shoot the film in the actual locations where Johnson shot Brick when he was able to. Some of those locations included San Clemente High School and the Lowes parking lot. James Jones had this to say to io9:
“I was a freshman when Rian shot Brick and so I knew all the locations back then. So many fans are still divided over The Last Jedi, and I think we just needed to make fun of how serious it’s all being taken by some of the fans.”
I thought the short turned out great and it accomplishes what the director set out to accomplish. Watch it for yourself and tell us what you think!
