Ewan McGregor Talks About The Influence Alec Guinness Had on His Portrayal of Obi-Wan Kenobi

Ewan McGregor is currently preparing to reprise his role as Obi-Wan Kenobi in a new series being developed by Lucasfilm for Disney+. Star Wars fans are incredibly excited about this and to see what kind of story they tell with the character that will cover his time on the planet Tatooine.

The actor recently appeared on The Graham Norton Show and when he was asked about his upcoming Star Wars prequel series, McGregor confirmed that they’re currently planning to start filming the Obi-Wan Kenobi series next year in March. He also talked about the influence that original Obi-Wan actor Alec Guinness had on his younger take on the character. He explained:

“The fun thing about doing them in the first place, when I was much younger, was trying to imagine Alec Guiness – how would he play these scenes as a younger guy. And it led me to watch a lot of his early work, which I hadn’t seen before. Brilliant movies, wonderful films that he’d been in…and I just had such a great time sort of studying him in those movies.

“So as you say. I’m much closer in age to him and it will be my challenge to try and sort of meet him somewhere. I love Alec Guiness, I never got to meet him, but I love him through his work and it’s a great honor to sort of try and pretend to be him.“

Lucasfilm’s Obi-Wan Kenobi series is set between the events of Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith and Star Wars: A New Hope. It was also confirmed that this will be a limited standalone series.

Deborah Chow (Better Call Saul, American Gods, The Mandalorian) will direct the series as well as serve as showrunner, with Hossein Amini (Drive, McMafia) and Joby Harold (Awake, King Arthur: Legend of the Sword) writing.

There have been some rumored details on the story and it’s been rumored that Anakin Skywalker and Darth Vader will appear in the show and that the story primarily revolves around Darth Vader’s hunt for his former Master, Obi-Wan. This has yet to be confirmed, but it would make sense for this to be a part of the story.

I know we’ve got a long way to go before we see this series on Disney+, but I’m excited to see how it turns out and I hope that the creative team delivers an great story!
