Earlier today the first trailer was released for Star Wars: The Last Jedi and that trailer featured a planet location that we’ve never seen before. The scene it debuted in showed a bunch of ships flying in and kicking up blood red dust. It was an extremely cool visual!
Thanks to director Ryan Johnson, we now know what the name of the planet is and he also offers up some new details on how it plays into the story. The name of the planet is this world is Crait and the director explains:
“It’s way out there. It’s very remote. It’s uncharted. It’s a mineral planet and so there are mines on it.”
Johnson goes on to say that there are some “beautiful design elements and I hope some really unique ones that we’re able to bring into it.” As for the red dust that the speeders are kicking up, that’s underneath a “white dusting of salt over this red, ruby-ish mineral base.”
Crait is also the site of “an old rebel base there that’s now abandoned.” It was one of the first things that Johnson came up with when he started planning his story for The Last Jedi and he reveals that “It ends up playing a key role in the movie” and that the Resistance fighters who flying the ships in the trailer “show up where they have to deal with a very pressing and immediate threat.”
Of course, he wouldn’t reveal what the threat was, but it looks like this is going to end up being a really cool scene worth looking forward to.
