‘Avengers 2’ Thursday Box Office Beats ‘Avengers’ with $27.6M

Many have wondered if Avengers: Age of Ultron will be able to beat its predecessor Marvel’s The Avengers at the box office to possibly become the highest grossing movie of all time, shattering every and all box office records. Its off to a good start, earning an estimated $27.6M in Thursday night previews, after kicking off last night at 7pm. This is almost $10M more than Marvel’s The Avengers earned back in 2012, when it brought in $18.7M during its late night previews.

Avengers: Age of Ultron didn’t break the box office record for Thursday previews, though. That distinction still belongs to Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2, which earned a hard to beat $43.5M back in July 2011. It eventually went onto make $91.07M. Earlier this month, the year’s highest grossing movie thus far, Furious 7, took in $15.8M from it’s Thursday night previews. It, too, opened at 7pm.

Avengers: Age of Ultron did set an IMAX record for Thursday previews. It pulled in $3M, beating the previous record holder The Dark Knight Rises, which made $2.3M back in 2012. Internationally, has already earned $287.3M. It’s Thursday domestic take will be included in Friday’s ticket sales. Many believe that the film will break the opening weekend domestic record set by Marvel’s The Avengers, which pulled in $207.4 over the course of its first three days.

Though, some believe that the Floyd Mayweather-Manny Pacquiao Saturday night fight may hinder that number. Its also believed that box office will shrink as the weekend rolls on, with superhero movies usually front loaded at the box office. It also doesn’t help that most kids are still in school, not yet out for summer break. Which will also have an effect on today’s early box office numbers. We’ll continue to update you as the numbers come in throughout the next three days.
