Not long after Star Wars: The Last Jedi was released, Lucasfilm announced that Rian Johnson would be directing his own Star Wars trilogy that is in no way connected to anything in the saga that George Lucas story.
This is something I’m actually excited about because it’s going to be its own unique story that is set in the Star Wars universe. As a Star Wars fan, this is the kind of thing that I was hoping to see from Lucasfilm when Disney bought them.
Thanks to Rian Johnson producing partner Ram Bergman, we now have an update on the project and what we can expect from it. During a recent interview with From the Grapevine, he reiterated what we already know about the films:
“It’s a completely new trilogy that writer-director Rian Johnson, my partner, is going to create. It’s all new characters. Everything is new.”
Bergman was then asked when we could expect to see the first of these movies be released and he said:
“I can’t tell you because we don’t know yet. Maybe in two years; it’s just in the early stages.”
So, the soonest we could see the first of these film could be in 2020. That’s actually pretty soon considering they are still in the early stages of development. This also means that it must be a high priority for Lucasfilm.
This new film trilogy will shift the franchise into a whole new direction because it will be the first that is in no way connected to any of the preexisting story elements or characters. We don’t know what exactly what Johnson is planning, but the director previously said:
“It’s fun because it’s kind of thinking, ‘Okay, outside of the Skywalker story and outside of the recognizable iconography, what is this? What is Star Wars?’ Or what do we need to retain from that, to pull forward for it to still be Star Wars — and what can we leave behind? They’re all the big questions that need to be thought of. And even the ones that we don’t know the answers to are things we need to figure out if Star Wars is going to be vital and alive moving forward and not just be a waxworks. We’re going to have to figure out how to tell vital new stories.”
I’m excited to see what comes of this. I hope that it turns out to be a great and entertaining film.
