For those of you who are curious about the origin of Kylo Ren’s wicket looking lightsaber, the Star Wars prequel comic book series The Rise of Kylo Ren, reveals how that distinctive lightsaber came to exist.
The series has taken us through Ben Solo’s fall into darkness as he leaves Luke Skywalker’s Jedi Temple, how he fell in with Snoke, and how he first met the Knights of Ren and took the name of Kylo Ren.
It turns out that his burning and racking red lightsaber that Kylo Ren is now associated with is the same lightsaber he built while training to be a Jedi. However, the original glowing blade was blue in the beginning. After Ben turned to the dark side, he wanted to make his lightsaber’s kyber crystal bleed. This is the process that gives the lightsabers of every Sith Lord their red blades.
Ben kind of overdid it when attempting to make his kyber crystal bleed and in the process, he also cracked it. When he tried to put his lightsaber back together with the kyber crystal, the unregulated energy from the broken crystal caused the lightsaber to short out.
As a way to fix it, Kylo installed the crossguard, which allowed for the excess energy of the blade to shoot out from the hilt’s side. That is the moment that Ben fully made his transformation into Kylo Ren.
All four issues of The Rise of Kylo Ren are on sale now. The collected edition will be released in July.
