Disney CEO Bob Iger has confirmed that the first Star Wars film to be released after Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker will be from Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss.
“We did a deal with David Benioff and D.B Weiss, who are famous for Game of Thrones, and the next movie that we release will be theirs. And we’re not saying anything more about that.”
That next movie won’t hit theaters until December 2022. The next Star Wars film after that won’t be released until December 2024, and then after that December 2026. We don’t know if all of those films will be from Benioff and Weiss, or if they will switch off with the trilogy that Rian Johnson is developing. When talking about why they are waiting so long to release a new Star Wars film, Iger said:
“[We thought] it would be smart for us to take a bit of a hiatus while we figure out what’s next. Now, we’re not going to wait until [Episode 9] is released and start figuring it out, we’re actually hard at work doing that already. The conclusion that we reached was that three years was the proper amount of time to not only take a breather and reset, but to really gear up for the next film’s release.”
We don’t know much about what Benioff and Weiss are planning for their Star Wars films, we just know that it will be set in a different time and corner of the universe and that it will involve all new settings and characters. There was a rumor that it would be set during the time of The Old Republic, and that it would take place “hundreds of years prior to the Skywalkers, so think almost Star Wars meets Lord of the Rings.”
None of those rumors have been confirmed. It’ll be interesting to see what the reaction to this news will be, especially since a lot of fans aren’t very happy with how they are handling the final season of Game of Thrones. The disappointment of the fans is plastered all over social media.
Hopefully, they don’t drop the ball on Star Wars next! Regardless, are you excited to see what Benioff and Weiss end up delivering for their Star Wars project?
