Rian Johnson is Looking Forward To Having Limitless Freedom On New STAR WARS Trilogy

We’re just days away from director Rian Johnson‘s first Star Wars movie landing in theaters and before any fans have even had the chance to react to it, he’s already been tapped by Lucasfilm to create an entirely new trilogy for the galaxy far, far away. What most filmmakers would see as a massive burden, Johnson seems to be excited about the opportunity to create a whole new trilogy.

During a press event for Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Johnson told IGN:

“Right now there’s all the freedom in the world. That’s the whole thing that’s exciting to me is let’s go some new places, let’s meet some new folks, let’s see what else is out there. Let’s have one story told over three films in this galaxy with no limitations. It’s pretty exciting.”

We don’t know too much about what direction Johnson will take this new series of films, clearly it’s far too early, but Johnson’s new trilogy will be separate from the episodic Skywalker saga. The trilogy is expected to introduce “new characters from a corner of the galaxy that Star Wars lore has never before explored.”

The comments Johnson made to IGN is very similar to previous comments made last month when he praised “the idea of doing a new story on the big canvas of three movies in this world.”

Johnson also explained how this opportunity came about:

“We all just had a really good time working together. I know for us, that was a big part of it. We were getting to the end of it and Kathy Kennedy and Bob Iger and Alan Horn, Alan Berkman, all the folks at Disney, we were just sad that this was coming to an end. We were like, ‘How do we figure out some way to keep working together?’ That’s when I pitched the idea of a new trilogy with a new story. That seemed really exciting for me.”

But we’ll all have to hold our Tauntauns because it is probably going to be a while before we get our first glimpse into Johnson’s new galaxy far, far away. We still have Two more Star Wars movies to come after the release of The Last Jedi. Solo: A Star Wars Story arrives in 2018 and will be followed by Star Wars: Episode IX (directed by J.J. Abrams) in 2019.

What are you looking forward to most about Johnson’s brand new trilogy?
