There was rumor reported earlier this week that Disney was in talks with Carrie Fisher‘s estate to possibly use her likeness in future installments of Star Wars. Since the rumors have spun out of control, Lucasfilm thought it was necessary to put an end to the rumors and speculation. They released an official statement on StarWars.com saying that they have no plans to digitally recreate Fisher’s iconic character Leia, which I’m sure will ease the minds of fans. Here’s what they had to say:
We don’t normally respond to fan or press speculation, but there is a rumor circulating that we would like to address. We want to assure our fans that Lucasfilm has no plans to digitally recreate Carrie Fisher’s performance as Princess or General Leia Organa.
Carrie Fisher was, is, and always will be a part of the Lucasfilm family. She was our princess, our general, and more importantly, our friend. We are still hurting from her loss. We cherish her memory and legacy as Princess Leia, and will always strive to honor everything she gave to Star Wars.
So that answers that. There are no plans for digital CG Leia. Whatever plans that Lucafilm had for her in Episode IX will be changed as they take certain parts of their story in a new direction.
