GAME OF THRONES Duo David Benioff and D.B. Weiss Drop Out of STAR WARS Project

Game of Thrones series creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss signed on with Lucasfilm to develop a new trilogy of Star Wars films earlier in the year. In fact, the first feature film that was supposed to be released after The Rise of Skywalker in 2022 was supposed to be the first of their trilogy.

Well, according to Deadline, Benioff and Weiss have dropped out of the project due to scheduling conflicts. They recently signed a big deal with Netflix to develop a number of projects, and as we suspected, that’s where all their time went. They had this to say in a statement:

“We love Star Wars. When George Lucas built it, he built us too. Getting to talk about Star Wars with him and the current Star Wars team was the thrill of a lifetime, and we will always be indebted to the saga that changed everything.

“There are only so many hours in the day, and we felt we could not do justice to both Star Wars and our Netflix projects. So we are regretfully stepping away.”

I guess getting to talk to George Lucas and the Star Wars creative team about creating a whole new story was enough for them. But Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy hopes to eventually work with them one day. She added:

“David Benioff and Dan Weiss are incredible storytellers,. We hope to include them in the journey forward when they are able to step away from their busy schedule to focus on Star Wars.”

I was curious to see what they would come up with, but I’m sure a lot of fans of Game of Thrones that weren’t happy with the ending will be fine with them not making any Star Wars movies. Does this mean Rian Johnson’s Star Wars trilogy will get pushed forward faster and moved into the 2022 release slot? It doesn’t look like he’s going anywhere! He’s still excited to make his trilogy and keeping his schedule open for it whenever Lucasfilm is ready to move on it.

Their movie was rumored to be set during The Old Republic, but that has never been confirmed by the studio. If that was the case, I’m sure Lucasfilm will eventually bring someone else on board to make it happen.

What do you all think about Benioff and Weiss dropping out of their Star Wars trilogy?
