The fourth season of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will take a horrifying turn with the introduction of the notorious Ghost Rider as the latest “enhanced” character to be seen roaming the streets of the Marvel Universe. Gabriel Luna will play Ghost Rider (aka Roberto “Robbie” Reyes), who is a hardscrabble high school student in East L.A. who illegally races cars to raise money with the goal of getting his family to a safer place to live. In the comics, several different people have been possessed by the Ghost Rider demon, with Reyes taking over in 2014 and driving a black muscle car instead of the traditional motorcycle – but it still leaving a trail of flames wherever it goes. Executive producer Jed Whedon says the series will largely remain true to the Ghost Rider comic, while giving the character its own spin. The presence of the conflicted antihero may also signal a darker era of storytelling for the series when Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. returns to ABC on Sept. 20.
