Marvel's Netflix Deal is Coming To an End and Future Shows Will Be Developed For Disney's Streaming Service

Well, as much as I don’t want to subscribe to another stupid streaming service, it seems like Disney is going to make me. We already knew that Disney would be killing off their deal with Netflix and Hulu and that all of their films and TV shows, including all of the Star Wars and Marvel stuff, will exclusively stream on their upcoming streaming service.

Now, it seems like any future Marvel series that would normally be developed and streamed on Netflix will be moving to the Disney streaming service in the future. I know this was a safe assumption, but hearing confirmation of their plan for it in the Wall Street Journal was still a little jarring.

It kinda sucks to hear that we eventually won’t be seeing any Marvel shows on Netflix anymore. I love those shows! Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and The Punisher!? Yeah, now I will definitely have to subscribe to the stupid Disney streaming service because I want to watch the story continue for those characters. I also will want to see any other new characters they eventually introduce to that universe.

The report also confirms that one of the main reasons that Disney is looking to purchase 20th Century Fox is so that they could have a better chance of competing with Netflix. Disney Chief Strategy Officer Kevin Mayer said:

“[W]e’ve turned our attention to the one platform seeing growth challenges. That’s the television platform. The Fox deal would’ve given Disney control of a large portion of Fox’s TV shows, which Disney would’ve then presumably moved over to their upcoming streaming service.”

Mayer goes on to say that we shouldn’t look at the Disney streaming service as “an anti-Netflix move, but a pro-Disney move.” This big move is going to end up costing Disney over $300 million a year but, according to the report, Disney is confident that the strategy will pay off in the end.

It’s no surprise that Disney only wants to make themselves stronger. Don’t get me wrong, I love Disney, but you can’t deny that they are on a path to dominating the world of entertainment.
